Flow trigger: Abandoned Checkout

Flows2 min readLast updated July 31, 2026

When does Abandoned Checkout fire?

The trigger fires when a contact was identified during checkout — for example because they entered their contact details — but no completed order follows. The phone number has to be captured at checkout, otherwise Keaz has no one to write to.

The sequence looks like this:

  1. The contact starts checkout in your shop.
  2. No order arrives within the defined period.
  3. Keaz registers the abandonment.
  4. The flow starts.

How do I set up the trigger?

  1. Create a flow under Flows.
  2. Click the Starting point block.
  3. On the right, select the trigger event Abandoned checkout.
  4. Add a Delay block after the Starting point — around 30 minutes.
  5. Configure the messages.
  6. Save.

What timing do we recommend?

Two messages are usually enough. The structure we recommend:

  1. First message after roughly 30 minutes.
  2. A 24-hour Delay block.
  3. Second reminder at the same time of day as the original checkout.

The second reminder lands at the hour the contact was already shopping, which is usually a better moment than the middle of their working day. You can combine the delays with conditions, for example a longer wait for a high cart value.

What stops the flow?

Completing the purchase. As soon as the order comes through, Keaz ends the flow automatically, so nobody who has already bought receives a reminder to buy. You do not have to build that stop yourself.

Why build this flow first?

Checkout is where a shop loses revenue it had almost earned, which is why this is the flow we suggest building before the others. It gives you:

  • Reactivation of abandoned checkouts in near real time
  • A second chance to convert a cart that was already filled
  • Messages personalised with what was in the cart
  • A flow that runs on its own once it is active, with no manual follow-up

To see what it brought in, give the flow its own discount code — Revenue Tracking: one discount code per flow explains how the attribution works.

What has to be in place first?

  1. Your shop is connected to Keaz — see Settings: Shopify Integration.
  2. Phone numbers are captured at checkout — that is what the Collect Phone Numbers After Checkout widget is for.
  3. The contact has a valid opt-in for marketing messages. Opt-in levels covers what each level allows; collecting WhatsApp opt-ins the GDPR-compliant way explains why a checkout tick box is not automatically enough.

The counterpart to this trigger is Contact Purchase, which starts a flow once the order does come through.

Frequently asked questions

Will a customer who completes the order after the first message still get the reminder?
No. Completing the purchase is a stop condition — the flow ends automatically, so the second reminder is never sent.
Why wait about 30 minutes before the first message?
It leaves room for people who were only interrupted and finish the order themselves, while the message still arrives when the cart is fresh. The delay is a Delay block in your flow, so you can change it.
What happens if no phone number was captured at checkout?
Then Keaz has no contact to reach and the flow does not start for that checkout. The Collect Phone Numbers After Checkout widget is what closes that gap.
